Wing Chun is a simple system of Chinese Kung Fu, whose origins are in Shoalin Temple tradition.
According to legend after the fall of the Shoalin Temple one of the five survivours a Buddhist nun named Ng Moi settled in province of southern China. Whilst there Ng Moi looked at all she knew of martial arts and realised that many of the techniques she knew relied on strength, ineffective for a woman facing a man in combat. She developed her own system based on using angles and sensitivity to overcome strength. and aggression, by employing simple, effective techniques of simultaneous attack and defence.
Whilst there she befriended a young woman by the name of Yim Wing Chun, who was being tormented by a local man who wanted to marry her. Ng Moi who had devised a martial arts system offered the man a challenge. In one years time if Yim Wing Chun could beat the man in a fight then he was to leave her alone, else she would marry him. The man accepted the challenge and so Yim Wing Chun went with Ng Moi to be trained.
On her return to the village Yim Wing Chun easily defeated the man, and was free to marry Leung Bok Chau, the man she was betrothed to. Yim Wing Chun taught her skills to her husband, who in honor of her, named the fighting system Wing Chun.
Over the years the Wing Chun system has been refined and added to by various Masters, who include Wong Wa bo, and his student Leung Yi Tai who incorporated the long pole weapon.
Wing Chun has been passed down through the gernerations to Grand Master Yip Man who is largely credited with introducing the west to the art of Wing Chun, and the man whom Bruce Lee studied under.
